I chose the former, which was well worth the slower-paced exploration. Tourists can drive around the windy roads, float down the river Dordogne, even take a hot air balloon ride to view the valley from above. There are several ways to see all of these sights. So watch the time and stop ANYWHERE you can find that is open and still serving food, or else be ready to find a (*cough*, *cough*) famous global fast-food restaurant. Most people from the United States might think that Google or Yelp would help with this need however, these apps are not reliable for knowing whether or not restaurants are open during the off-season or even during weekday. Although still beautiful and less tourists to have to navigate your camera around, finding an open restaurant for lunch in a village is difficult, if not near-impossible in some villages, especially if you are looking for one past 1:00 PM. PRO TIP: Visiting in October like I did can prove to be both rewarding and a challenge. If you want to see all of these types of places on your next trip to France but want to stay in only one area of France, then look no further! They laughed and said, “Oh, you will definitely see castles.” In addition, I also had the opportunity to see gorgeous landscapes of rolling green hillsides, extremely cute flower-filled villages with quintessentially French homes and buildings, centuries-old churches and monuments, caves within which underground rivers flowed, and archaeological sites ranging from very old (Cro-Magnon era) to more modern (18th century). I naively told them I wanted to see castles. I hosted a French foreign exchange student from this area for a school year, and when it came time to travel to France his family graciously hosted me while I was in the area. Named after the river Dordogne that runs through it, the French department is also known for its castles and small villages. My next stop in France after Carcassonne was the Dordogne Valley.
